The term “Porn addiction” is not an official medical diagnosis but experiencing an uncontrollable desire or compulsion to view porn can be problematic for some people as other behavioral or drug addictions. In fact, research suggests that intense pornography shares the same mechanisms with substance or drug addiction.
So how do you know if you are addicted to pornography? I’d like to tell you that simply viewing or enjoying porn does not make you addicted nor does it require you to start seeking solution to fix it. But addictions are about lack of control and this might cause significant problems. You may need help if you find out that amount of time you use in watching porn keeps increasing and you start having feelings of guilt. If you spend hours surfing the internet basically for porn, neglecting your relationships, your work and your responsibility, you do need help. You may need help if you feel you can’t enjoy sex without first viewing porn. You may need help if you can’t resist porn even though it is affecting your life.
It is hard to say why viewing porn can sometimes become an out of control behavior. It may start during the period you feel bored, or lonely or anxious, curious or depressed. You may also be starting watching porn because you enjoy the rush it gives you and finding yourself wanting that rush more often. By then, it may not matter that this viewing habit is causing a problem to you or that you feel bad or guilty about it might not matter. It is that feeling, that rush that you need and you can’t resist. If you try to stop, you find out you simply can’t stop, then it’s already an addiction. I’d like to inform you that, like other forms of addictions, addiction to pornography can happen to anyone.
Here are some practicable ways to help regain control of your life. First thing to note is that you may control of your life over pornography addiction on your own without external help. It is possible. It may be better if you’re accountable to someone though. You need to limit access. You should delete porn sites from your mobile phone, computers and other storage devices. You can actually install anti-porn/ porn blocker software on your phone or computer. You can get this app on your play store. Have one or two activities that you can turn to when you have that powerful urge for porn watching hit you. Activities like dancing, singing, meditating, exercise etc. whenever you want to watch porn can help.
Remind yourself how it has affected you negatively, how it has affected your life, your relationships and your work and write it down if that works. Always try to avoid any triggers like boredom, loneliness depression, hunger, alcohol etc. finally, keep a journal to track setbacks, reminders and alternate activities that works.
Are you religious? If it helps, do make an attempt to include spiritual exercises. Talk to your spiritual leader about this. A combination of all of the steps listed here is very okay as long as it achieves the purpose.
You may need a therapist if you believe you have a compulsion or addiction and you cannot handle it yourself.Your therapist may recommend individual or group or family counselling. Support group are also helpful. There is no medication for pornography addiction, all it requires is a talk therapy.
