Most people try some form of treatment at home before visiting the hospital. It’s expected, given the cost of medical care and constraints of daily life. Attempting home remedies for medical issues is not bad if you’re doing the right thing. This is why we have compiled a list of home remedies for common dental problems. Common dental issues include toothache or pain, bleeding or swollen gums, and gum irritation. Let’s see what these remedies are.
Check out our article on saltwater rinses. Table salt has antibacterial properties and you can make a natural disinfectant by dissolving salt in water. This will help to reduce any inflammation and speed up the healing process. All you need do is mix 1/2 teaspoon (tsp) of salt into a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash. A saltwater rinse will help to loosen food particles and debris that are stuck in your teeth. You can choose to floss after for better results.
For pain and swelling in the mouth, a cold compress is a great idea at home. Wrap a bag of ice in a towel and apply to the affected area for 20 minutes each time. The effect is that cold causes vasoconstriction. This means that the blood vessels in the area constrict and this lessens the pain and swelling.
Garlic has a wide range of uses as a home remedy. Your dental issues are one of them. Crush a clove of garlic into a paste and apply directly to the affected area. Add a little bit of salt before you do. If you can, chew a clove of garlic for the same effect. Garlic has antibacterial properties and is known to reduce pain and inflammation.
Please understand that these treatments do not substitute for proper dental care in any way. If any symptom lasts more than 2 days, endeavour to see your dentist. Do the same for unusual or very severe symptoms. Remember to brush your teeth twice daily and floss regularly too. You can also use over-the-counter pain relievers for toothache. Stay healthy.
