In a previous article, we already discussed what to do after your condom breaks. However, it goes without saying that if you can avoid a break, you would not need to do something after one. In this article, we will see the common causes of condom breaks and how you can avoid them.
Size always matters. Is the condom too small? Then a tear is imminent. Is it too large, then it may slip off during sex. In this case, there’s no condom break per se, but the contraception has equally failed. There’s no better way to find one that fits than trying on different sizes. You will know when it fits just right.
It is also important that you know how to correctly open a condom and wear one. Before you do attempt to open one, always check the expiry date on it. Do not use expired condoms. After you have ascertained that the condom is not expired, open it the right way. Do not use your teeth or scissors. Your hands are the best way to this prevents tears even before intercourse starts. If you’re unsure on how to wear condoms, check out videos on youtube for guidance. Keep in mind that you should hold a condom at the tip, wear it and roll it down the penis.
Do you always use lubrication during sex? If yes, what kind? Do not use oil-based lubrication. Use water or silicone-based ones instead. Always use plenty of lube. The better the lubrication, the less the friction and chances of tears. You may even apply a little lube to the penis before rolling on the condom. However, do this with very little lube or the condom may slip off.
Never wear two condoms at once. It does not serve as double protection in any way. This is even counterproductive in that the friction between both condoms increases the risk of tears at any time. Always try to store your condoms away from heat, light and cold. A cool, dry place is best. So, your wallet doesn’t work.
Now you know what to do to avoid condom tears. This is not to say that there is no risk of tears even if you do all these. However, the chances are quite low. Even if it happens, you know what to do. Practice safe sex always!
